The first ever 'step in stone Sculpture Design Competition' 2015 - submissions open

Black Swan Arts is a dynamic arts centre at the heart of the renowned creative market town of Frome in Somerset. The building features a vibrant programme of contemporary and innovative art and crafts, providing inspiration for the creative talents of Frome and beyond. The centre is made up of the Main Gallery, 3 artists' studios, a pop-up studio, SEED Home and Gifts shop, Divas Cafe, the Courtyard and the Round Tower where workshops and community events take place

The first ever 'step in stone Sculpture Design Competition' 2015

Black Swan is delighted to be working with Fiona Campbell on the 'step in stone' sculpture design competition for young people. IT'S SIMPLE to enter - Create the design for a piece of sculture; take a photograph of the work, upload and submit the picture online here

The competition is part of the 'step in stone' quarries project, to be featured in step in stone’s trail and exhibition at the Black Swan Arts Centre, as part of Somerset Art Works Festival 2015.

Young Open Exhibition 2015 - Prize Winners
The People's Choice Award - Mitchell Betts 15yrs from Warminster School
Over 300 votes were cast by visitors to the Black Swan Young Open exhibition to choose the winner of the prestigious People’s Choice Award.
In the end there was just one vote between each of the top three pictures. The winner is Mitchell Betts 15yrs from Warminster School with his haunting drawing in pastels called Hidden Face. He wins a one-to-one workshop with mixed media artist Sarah Ball and his picture will be framed by Mount Art. The second place went to December by Hadassah Buechner 17yrs of King Edwards School. And third was Zac Barnett 17yrs at Norton Radstock College with his tantalising photograph Home – people might remember his picture of Lola the dog last year.

Divas Cafe
Bertinet Bakery Bread

Divas Cafe are now selling Bertinet Bakery bread EVERY FRIDAY, SATURDAY & MARKET SUNDAYS.
Bertinet only ever use natural, wholesome ingredients and never use flour improvers, processing aids or enzymes – ingredients which are often used to save time or increase shelf life. Instead, they invest the time and skill needed to create real, honest bread that looks, smells and tastes amazing.

We are stocking sour dough, baguettes, ciabattas, red onion focaccia, almond croissants and lots more.

News from Artisan Studio 1

Peggie Sue at Studio Shop 1 has a wonderful collection of decorations made from felt. Any fellow felters interested in buying the carded fleece, come along to Studio 1. The fleece is sourced from a local Alpaca farm just outside Frome. We also have hand knits and many other ideas for Christmas gifts.

Our personalised wooden chopping boards are very popular so don't forget to order yours soon, or a stunning baguette boards, buy from the shelf or have it personalised, the choice is yours!


And what is it that we need you to do?
We need you to put your feet up in a peaceful place, and enjoy tea and cake. On us!

We put on some wonderful exhibitions in our main gallery, and like most good venues, we need willing volunteers to welcome visitors and keep an eye on the great artwork. Pop Up Studio Opportunity
Our Pop Up Studio started in September last year and we never at that time imagined how successful they would actually be. We are now taking bookings for 2015!

This space in the LinkWay by the other Shops and the Round Tower is available to rent for a two week period at £100, use it as a workshop space a shop or exhibition.

The Black Swan does not charge commission on sales for the Pop Up!

Round Tower for Hire
The Round Tower is available to hire at reasonable rates for workshops, exhibitions, meetings and events. Conveniently located near the main car park, this historic former drying mill is split over two levels.
