SGFA at the Black Swan

This is an opportunity to see the best of the Society of Graphic Fine Art Members work in a specially-curated exhibition here in the South West.

The Society of Graphic Fine Art – The Drawing Society is the only national society in the UK dedicated exclusively to drawing.
Founded in 1919, the Society promotes fine drawing skills in both traditional and contemporary media. Today, they have more than 130 elected members across Britain, consisting of professional artists from all areas of the art world who work in all drawing and printmaking media.

'The Future Can't Wait'

Black Swan Arts are pleased to collaborate with Bath Spa University for 'Future Can't Wait', an exciting showcase of 40 exhibits from MA Students across 4 disciplines - Ceramics, Fashion and Textiles, Photography and Fine Art.

Frome Botanical Artists

Led by tutor Sylvia Balch, Frome Botanical Artists are a class of 18 students who meet at the Frome Cricket Pavilion on a Friday. This class originated in Frome College 15 years ago and now exhibit each year either in Frome or Stourhead. Working mainly with watercolour and occasionally pen and ink. Sylvia specialises in botanical illustration and botanical painting. The society studies by looking closely at plant material and compose then draw the specimen to scale and apply watercolour paint so as to create a two dimensional image of the plant. The exhibition will show their latest work, both framed and mounted artwork also quality cards, packs of cards and notelets.

Steve Burden

Winner of the Black Swan Open 2016, Steve graduated from Goldsmiths College, London with First Class Honours and Bath Spa University with a Masters Degree in Fine Art (distinction). Prior to becoming a painter Steve had a successful career as a Creative Director working for various international branding agencies. He has lived in the UK, US, Portugal, Australia and the Middle East and benefits from drawing on these experiences to influence his work. His current practice is inspired by his childhood growing up on the Pepys Estate in Deptford, south London, where he investigates dystopian themes and ideas associated with British housing estates.

Ricky Romain
Long Gallery

We welcome Human Rights Artist Ricky Romain to the Long Gallery this Summer. Based in Dorset, Ricky is known for using the human form to create work to engage with themes around asylum, immigration, war crimes, torture and human rights injustices. Using his art to explore our collective compassion, his fictionalised scenes reveal to us our own condition as well as others.

Black Swan are delighted be one of the touring venues for SKETCH OPEN 2017 and to welcome back what has been one of our most popular shows ever!

The competition and touring exhibition SKETCH aims to promote the diversity and importance of drawing and the role of the sketchbook in contemporary creative practice. For the first time SKETCH will be open to international as well as UK based artists. One hundred Sketchbooks will be chosen through an open submission process by a panel of three selectors with subject expertise representing the perspectives of writer, practitioner and curator.

This competition offers unique opportunities for the selected artists to develop their ideas with the help of the following prizes.
