We are helped by a small and very loyal army of volunteers without whom the building could not function. You can help us with a range of tasks, from stewarding the main gallery though to admin and marketing, even the occasional bit of painting (you don't need to be an artist for the last one).

For further details and to be part of the team come in and speak to one of our friendly stewards in the main gallery or contact Emma in the office on 01373 473980 [email protected]

Emma Tuck: Sight | Unseen
The Round Tower
Monday 12th September- Saturday 1st October

The core of ‘Sight|Unseen’ is a series of anatomical Rotring pen drawings of native British trees – the leaves and bark as well as cells, tissues and fibres. Other drawings focus on wounded nature. Emma’s work is informed by natural form and pattern – spirals, fissures, branches, waves, plants, landscapes. But it is not about faithfully representing the natural world. It is about nature as it appears to her – inevitably refracted through the psychological, the political and the trivial.

Artists make metaphors. Dan Hampson brilliantly uses the metaphor of the explorer. This is the artist as explorer, where curiosity, desire, wonder, humility and ego, intrepidly set forth into the dark interior of an unknown continent called human nature. Preview evening: Friday 17 April 6pm - 8pm ALL WELCOME
Artist Talk: Tues 28 April at 7pm

Where are you from?” asked the girl at the bar. Cal explored the emphasis in his head before answering. He had been born on More’s Utopia:B but had been space-bounced planet by planet before work had taken him, well everywhere else. Slowly his human pride got the better of him. “Earth, I suppose” he replied. “Is it pretty?” she replied with disinterest. “I don’t know” he said “ Never been there……."

Imagine the extreme weather patterns as being the result of human intervention /actions which prevents nature being in balance.

Ledson's trembling, lyrical, empty scapes seem to suggest a calm, pastoral, safe world where the perspective of the human self seems central and control seem worlds away.

In doing so, Jim is hoping to gain some insight into the way of paint, and the psychology of letting the' bird in the hand' go, in the hope of catching 'two in the bush'.

Friday 25 April - 6pm - 8pm

Peter Stiles has painted pictures of a small area of Devon since 1980. For 15 years he only painted from observation. During this time he gained a knowledge of the forms and colours of the landscape which he now draws upon to create pictures which are generated from specific emotions. The forms and colours of the landscape have become the building blocks that he uses in order to construct his compositions. There are particular places, Sand Lane, Fisherman's Rock and some waterfalls which he has painted repeatedly. The way in which these pictures have been constructed can be compared to the way in which a musician produces variations on a theme. The subject matter generates a basic structure which can be repeated in different forms.

Who do we think we are? Identity, Ancestry and Intergenerational Perspectives
A CPD workshop / talk and research event
Saturday 1st March 2014 - 10am - 4pm
Round Tower

In the first half of this event I ask why the phenomenon of ancestry research has become so popular. I will also recount some current and recent research into intergenerational dynamics and ask whether a longer term view, much spoken about but rarely acted on in is in fact something that needs enter-taining in all walks of life, including the practice of counselling and psychotherapy and in organisa-tions and the professions.

In the second half of the event there will be an opportunity to participate in a focus group that will allow participants to discuss their relationship to issues raised by the talk. This will part of an ongoing psycho-social research project into intergenerational memory and identity.

Make a date with SKETCH
SKETCH Exhibition: Jan 11 - Feb 8

It has been a delight to see so many visitors of all ages in the gallery over the last three weeks, among them artists and students travelling some distance to see our current exhibition of artists' sketchbooks, SKETCH. 'Fantastic – best show I've seen in ages' one visitor from Weymouth commented, and a Wiltshire college student said it just made him want to go and draw.

The show offers a very special insight into what is usually a much more private world, and the generosity of the artists sharing these inspiring books is not to be underestimated. SKETCH is approaching its final week so if you haven't been in yet, make sure you do it before February 8th. Why not give it some time too, as fifty-four sketchbooks is almost like seeing fifty-four shows in one room ... you might need to take a break for lunch!

Valentines day is the perfect time to say.......I love you.
Here at Seed we are currently sourcing new stock from up and coming British designers ready to adorn our shelves. New ranges of jewellery and beautiful greetings cards are on their way, just in time for Valentines Day.

Black Swan Arts is seeking a Finance and Fundraising Trustee
Finance Trustee
To support the centre manager who takes the day to day control of the building and its finances. Ideally seeking an individual who is prepared to assist with budgets, help with the management accounts and provide backup for financial decisions made.

Fundraising Trustee
Also seeking an individual with an idea of fundraising, how to apply, where to apply. This role would also include bidding and writing reports.
All roles are support by the current Trustees who have been working with the Black Swan for many years, we have a strong team of volunteers driving the Black Swan forward.

Volunteers required
Black Swan is currently seeking volunteers to assist in the Gallery.

We have a number of exciting Exhibitions this year, starting with "SHIFT: What is the work of Art?" and ending with "Charlotte Moore" in December, throughout this time we have the "Young Open Art", the "Open Craft" and "Edwina Bridgman" in the Summer.

The chance to assist with the setup of the exhibition is offered along with the stewarding throughout its opening time. This gives you an opportunity to interact with members of the public with similar interests or people who are just curious as to what's happening. We always encourage volunteers to attend the preview and join us for a drink before it opens to the general public.
